痞える

つかえる【閊える･痞える】

〔滞る〕 stick; be [get] stuck; jam; be [get] jammed (up); clog; be [get] clogged; catch; get caught; 〔胸がふさがる感じがする〕 feel pressure [a pain] 《in one's chest》.

●(食物が)のどにつかえる get stuck in one's throat; 〔症状〕 have a throat obstruction [blockage]

・胸がつかえる feel pressure [a pain] in one's chest; 〔症状〕 have chest pains

・言葉がつかえる be at a loss for [unable to think of] a word; be stuck for words; stumble over one's words; falter; break down

・スピーチの半ばで突然つかえる break down in the midst of one's speech

・つかえつかえ話す speak haltingly

・返事につかえる be at a loss for an answer.

●この部屋では天井に頭がつかえるだろう. In this room, he's likely to hit his head on the ceiling.

・〔引っ越しなどで〕 ピアノは入り口でつかえて入りません. The piano will get stuck in [won't fit through] the entrance.

・みぞに泥がつかえている. The ditch is choked with mud.

・排水口に落ち葉がつかえている. The drain is clogged [choked] with fallen leaves.

・路地で車がつかえている. The alley is jammed with cars.

・前の電車が先につかえている. The train ahead is blocking the tracks.

・〔混雑した通路などで〕 先がつかえてこれ以上進めない. It's so jammed up ahead that we can't move any further.

・何かがつかえてドアが開かない. Something jammed in the door is keeping it from opening. | The door is jammed shut.

・上がつかえていて昇進できない. This place is top-heavy, so we can't get promoted.

・私は今仕事がつかえている. My hands are full now.

・彼は舞台に上がって最初のせりふでつかえた. He got stuck on his first line when he appeared on stage.

・つかえつかえどうにか英語で買い物を済ませた. I somehow managed to get my shopping done in my halting [broken] English.
